Quite often we come across troubling error while archiving MS Outlook email messages. When you archive messages in Outlook 2000, you may receive the following error message:

Errors occurred while archiving. Look for a detailed report in your Deleted Items folder

And you get the detailed report as:

Error while archiving folder in store. The source and destination folders for this operation cannot be the same.

Cause

This behavior occurs because the personal folders (.pst) file that is used to archive the messages is open in the current Outlook profile. By design in Outlook 2000, the .pst file that is used to archive messages should not be in use while the archive process is in progress.

Resolution

In order to resolve this issue, close the PST file that is used for to archive messages and try to archive the messages again. To do this:

• On the View menu, click Folder List.
• Right-click the .pst file that is used to archive messages at the upper level, and then click Close. This closes the .pst file and removes it from the Outlook profile.
• Try the archive process again.

This way you can perform error- free archiving of PST file.
