Microsoft Outlook, the most ordinarily used email client in organizations to establish communication among employees. Outlook stores employees’ emails, notes, contacts, etc. in Personal Storage Table (PST) file, which can be easily carried / transferred from one system to another. One can use USB media, CD, or network share to transfer PST files from one PC to another. Carrying Outlook PST file in USB media or CD is quite easy and reliable but if you transfer Outlook PST file through network sharing, the PST file may get corrupt.

When you access the Outlook PST file transferred through network sharing and get error messages like “Outlook.pst file cannot be opened” then it simply indicates the damage of Outlook PST file. Another reason for the damage of Outlook PST file can be incompatibility of the software versions on both systems. For example, the Outlook PST file, you have been transferring is created in Outlook 2000 on Windows 2003 while the system on which the PST file will be transferred has Outlook 2007 installed on Windows XP.

If Outlook PST file has been damaged because any of the reasons whether network sharing, systems incompatibility, or any other logical reason, it must be repaired to access emails, contacts, notes, etc. stored in it. Microsoft provides scanpst.exe, Outlook PST Repair tool, which scans the damaged Outlook PST file and creates a new PST file containing all of your important emails, notes, etc. Executes the following steps to repair the damaged PST file using scanpst.exe file:

1. Click Start > Search.
2. In Search window, click All files and folders link and then type scanpst.exe.
3. Click the Search button. After completing the searching process, you can view the scanpst.exe file in the search result.
4. Double-click the scanpst.exe file. The scanpst.exe program starts in which you have to browse the location of damaged PST file.
5. Click the Browse button to locate the damaged Outlook PST file. You can locate the PST file in different operating systems by following the below given paths:

  • Windows 98 or Windows Me: Disk Drive > Windows > Local Settings > Application Data
  • Windows NT 4.0: Disk Drive > WINNT > Profiles >username > Local Settings >Application Data
  • Windows XP or Windows Server 2003: Disk Drive > Documents and Settings > username >Local Settings >Application Data >Microsoft >Outlook
  • Windows Vista: Disk Drive > users > username > AppData > Local >Microsoft >Outlook
  • 6. Click the Start button. The scanpst.exe starts repairing the damaged PST file. After the software has completed the recovery process, start Outlook and you will see all recovered folders in left pane. Now, you just have to create a new PST file in your Outlook profile to use the recovered folders.

However, scanpst.exe has been provided by Microsoft as a free tool for Outlook PST Repair ; it is noticed that scanpst.exe not always perfectly repair the damaged PST file. Sometimes, it happens that after completing the scanning process, scanpst.exe does not display any error but you cannot access the PST file. In that situation, the only solution is to use Kernel for Outlook software.

Kernel for Outlook- PST Repair and recovery software perfectly understands the reasons behind Outlook PST damage. On the basis of the complexity of the damage, the software uses its effective data recovery algorithms to repair Outlook PST file. The software supports almost all versions of Windows operating systems and MS Outlook.
